The Hunar Gallery will be showcasing paintings by well known Paris based Iraqi master calligrapher, Hassan Massoudy from the 1st of July, 2008.
Hassan Massoudy, Paris based Calligrapher was born in 1944 in Iraq, and at the age of seventeen, he started to work with calligraphers in Baghdad for eight years. In 1969 he attended Fine Arts school in Paris, where he had the opportunity to discover and deeply appreciate the colour range in Leger’s, the light in Matisse’s and the dramatic aspect of the lines and shapes in Picasso’s work. In 1975, he obtained degree in Plastic Art.
Hassan Massoudy’s creations came out from the meeting of the past with the present, East with West, from tradition with modernity. He has been perpetuating the tradition of Calligraphy craft at the same time as breaking it. He simplifies lines, tending to purer lines, adding colours opening on to a wider unlimited world. The drawing of his calligraphy became swifter and his gesture richer. Traditionally Arabic calligraphy is done with black ink. To better express himself, he broke from the tradition and introduced other colours particularly on his work on large size paper.
He has introduced in it some signs, letters, words and/or sentences throughout his creations to express himself better.
Hassan Massoudy is a true modern Calligraphic Artist in vital communication, with the outside world. He does Exhibitions, Book Publishing, Speeches and teaches the Art of Arabic Calligraphy.
Hunar Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday through Thursday. The gallery is situated in Villa #6, Green Coast Village, Street No-49a, opposite the Dubai Airport Expo, Rashidiya.
