2 months ago, MIT’s School of Architecture & Planning started a competition called ‘Just Jerusalem: Visions for a place for peace’, aiming at securing peace for the residents of the city of all ethnics and religions. The competition is solely concentrating on the Urban problems of the city that need to be solved in order to provide peace and better life standards to its residents.
The name of the competition – Just Jerusalem: Visions for a Place of Peace – is meant to suggest Jerusalem not only as a Just City but also as Just a City, to try to look at its challenges more as problems of urban planning and design rather than just international politics. While the competition is couched in those physical terms, all entries will also include written descriptions of their visions in terms of institutions, practices, meanings of place, renderings of space, interpretations of history, etc.
Well It’s not a conventional competition, considering a city with 2 goverments, which means 2 infrastructure providers, that’s only to begin with! As well, it’s not restricted to architects and planners, the scope includes economics, political science, engineering, and arts.

What is the competition exactly about? Since Design 5 is not Urban related?
Arch said on Jul 04 07 at 2:53 amactually.. the project will be in design 6…. the project about something(free choice) group the three religions Islam, christianity & jewish… & symbolize the land of peace .. Jerusalem..
Haitham Issam said on Jul 04 07 at 10:59 amOh my bad! Well, it’s an interesting project no doubt, but I guess the issue is not as easy as it sounds. My graduation project was Islam related and it was a very sensitive issue to deal with; it has lots of factors involved and one should be really careful dealing with them. I really like Mr. Mike’s approach, and a lot of you guys don’t get him.
Seriously it’s a lot safer when a building’s content isn’t related to belief systems and ideologies, but still it wouldn’t teach you much on the long term.
Arch said on Jul 04 07 at 3:22 pmi know it really difficult 2 deal with this kind of projects… we must be careful in analyzing it…. on the other hand… it is great challenge 4 us….
i prefer not saying “oh my god” but ” good luck guys” sounds better…
