There is a great deal of buzz going around ‘Design’ in the arab world, I think attention to this powerful concept is increasing by the day and hopefully in the right direction.
International Design Forum is the first worldwide scale design platform originating from the middle east, it is obvious that this is a dedicated project that promotes understanding for several aspects of design in this region. Personally I think we have a long way to establish fair attention to broader issues realted to this initiative, their list now is involving a great number of architects such as Zaha Hadid, Rasem Badran, Khaled Al-Najjar, George Katodrytis, and Amman Mayor engineer Omar Maani, yet they’re promoting design in general. I would love to see advertisers get invloved in this, advertising is really far away from being a professional industry in the arab world; great projects are trying to prove that wrong, such as ADBLOGARABIA, and I’d love to see their presence more often in public, and 360east‘s Humeid, and his focus on design, media, & technology in arabia. Along with our humble effort to feature architecture, arts, and design in the middle east, and a lot more that I don’t know of, and magazines that I know of (e.g. IDentity, insideout, 2A..), there is an increasing attention towards design in general among individuals and industries alike.
International Design Forum is also aware of the power of blogs, they teamed up with dezeen and they’re publishing a blog during the forum, taking place on the 27-29 of May, to feature news and updates on architecture and several other projects involved. I think this is a great start.
