To start with, simply this symposium was the best symposium our department has ever put together, and I’m sure of it! We’ve never had such an amazing list of internationally celebrated speakers, such as Mr. Charles Jencks, or Mr. Rasim Badran, or Prof. Attilio Petruccioli!
Now the gist of this symposium can be summarized in 3 words: Dubai, Global Urbanism, Internationalism.

I found Mr. Rasim’s presentation to be overwhelming, I know about him for so long, and I wanted to know more about him, but I would’ve liked it a lot more if I listened to his brain rather than his hand. Well I personally appreciate both, but the symposium is directed towards educating, but on the other hand a lot of students were really inspired by him, as well as myself, and I think that does it. It was more of a poetic outlet for his thoughts and approach towards architecture being the user’s own experience and an enhancement to the community – his thoughts were travelling all over the place.
Mr. Jencks’ presentation was full of great concepts, the iconic building’s message, the implicit and the explicit, the new pun ‘Dhowism’, etc etc.. It was left open-ended I guess but it had a lot of questions unanswered and some of them were implicit; the question of the future of the urbanism internationally, and implicitly, Dubai’s. That implicit question was embeded in every presentation there was! I should’ve written this right after the symposium was over to remember more details.
