It’s not a fresh piece of news by now that Abu Dhabi secured a deal with france to “rent” the Louvre’s name-treasures-expertise for 1.3 BILLION US DOLLARS according to a 30-year deal. But as it gets to me, I’m a bit annoyed by the fact that they’re renting history, not just the Louvre.
If the scenario was something close to: “Making a local attempt to participate in the global arts culture and push the region’s awareness a little further to international standards of art by acquiring the help and expertise of the Louvre to run a temporary quality control for the new museum.” I would humbly appreciate it more from a country with enough international exposure and potential to pull off such a breakthrough. It’s great to spread the Louvre’s history and spread it’s great collection of art far beyond its borders, I even think it’s great to have a chance to see those pieces live but I can’t get past the fact that I’m not visiting the real Louvre.
It’s different with the Guggenheim; the Guggenheim was established as in institute to push the arts through its brand and it spread from there, but the Louvre is a compilation of centuries, Nine Centuries!
Honestly, I’m not actually against that new Louvre, I’m just a fan of originals and I think an original attempt would have a genuine feel to it.
By the way, Al-Sa’adiyat cultural district is going to cost 27 BILLION US DOLLARS.
